Chickasaw Emergency Shelter To Be Completed Spring 2011 Chickasaw Mayor Byron Pittman was joined by more than 50 community leaders and citizens, including Congressman Jo Bonner, Tera Jackson representing Senator Richard Shelby, Ronnie Adair, Mobile County Emergency Management Agency Director and Debbie Peery, Alabama EMA Hazard Mitigation, on Monday, March 29, to celebrate the ground-breaking of the city’s first new public safety building - a 3,168 gross square feet community safe room to be built at 799 Iroquois Street. The facility will accommodate at-risk citizens including the “limited at-risk population that cannot evacuate out of harm’s way prior to an event such as first responders and those physically unable to leave the area including the disabled and elderly.” "We are very happy to be able to provide emergency shelter for our elderly and disabled citizens, as well as our first responders," said Mayor Byron Pittman. The emergency shelter will house 174 occupants and have a conference room, storage, work/electrical, and janitorial rooms, unigender bath facilities that meet ADA guidelines, and a kitchen preparation area. There will be 18 total parking spaces with 2 accessible spaces. The facility meets FEMA 361 guidelines and will be built at least to 200 mph design wind speed. The City of Chickasaw public safety personnel will be responsible for emergency shelter operations during disasters. The city was awarded funding in October 2009 through FEMA to build a $1.2 million emergency shelter that will house first responders, elderly and disabled citizens who are not able to evacuate the area during emergency situations.
